Hello friends! 🎊
Happy new year! As the new year and new project cycle starts, the Develop for Good team is excited to present another monthly newsletter update.
We’re incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support we’ve received from everyone - industry mentors, our esteemed advisory board, and our stars - volunteer designers, developers, and student leaders who have donated their technical skills to create impactful products for our nonprofit partners!
And have you heard? We’ve been featured in TechCrunch and SiriusXM! 📣
Our Winter 2021 Cycle Has Begun! 🎉
We are so excited that our Winter 2021 cycle is underway. Here’s a glimpse of our stats:
Over 1050 applications submitted from students hailing from 100+ universities
We selected and onboarded ~200 new developers, designers, and PMs representing 75+ universities
Of the new cycle of volunteers, 63% are female and 33% are first-generation/low-income
Winter 2021 Projects 🗂
Interested in what projects we are working on? Here are some of the highlights from our Winter 2021 Projects:
Akron Children’s Hospital: Cleft Care Journey
Project: Web application development
Description: The goal of this web app is to educate and guide the parents of children born with cleft lip and/or palate along the decades-long management of the deformity, particularly around the times the child may be undergoing surgical reconstruction. The web app will be interactive for patients and their families to explore. For example, providing a clear reference for post-operative care and expectations, or clear visual representation of their risks of having subsequent children with clefts.
Computers2Kids
Project: Mobile application development
Description: We are working to develop an application to help distribute computers to low-income families, with limited or no access to a computer at home. Since COVID-19, the need for a computer in the home is more important than ever. C2K has been working throughout the pandemic but needs to find a way to streamline the application and client interface process.
Case Studies From Last Cycle 🤗
Curious about completed projects from Fall 2020? Take a look at a few of our published Case Studies:
1Day Sooner: Using Data and UI/UX to Combat COVID-19
The Develop for Good team helped redesign 1Day Sooner’s website and create interactive visualizations that would help create awareness about COVID-19 risk and vaccine funding. Read their Case Study here, and check out the final projects at www.1daysooner.org and Olivia’s own write-up!
Do For Children Website Development
Do For Children is a non-profit organization based in Malawi that has been conducting youth and community empowerment projects since 2017. They received official non-profit status from the government of Malawi earlier this year. They partnered with Develop For Good so that volunteers could help them make a strong online presence. Read their Case Study here, and check out the final website at www.doforchildren.org
San Diego Zoo: Web Tools Redesign
The goal of this project was to design a website that allows users to (1) search for the natural occurrences and institutional collections of different plant species in California, and (2) keep track of and update the users’ institutions’ lists of the plant species that they have already collected and plan to collect. Read their Case Study here!
Shout Out to Our Industry Mentors for Hosting Workshops 💪
We’d like to thank our following industry mentors for holding Product Management, Technical Development, and UI/UX Design workshops for our PMs, developers, and designers!
Thank you for helping us raise $5,860! 💰
Thank you so much to everyone who donated to our Holiday Giving Campaign and helped us raise $5,860! Had our first 50 projects been outsourced, they would have amounted to ~$2 million in design and development costs. The only way we can continue our volunteer program and help impactful nonprofits meet their technical needs is through your continued support.
These donations help us cover our operational expenses for our future projects. These expenses include training, student/nonprofit/sponsorship outreach, subscriptions for development tools, and fellowships for first-generation/low-income (FLI) members of our volunteer community.
To donate, please visit our Donate page here:
If relevant, we’d appreciate you taking advantage of your corporation’s Matching Gifts program to amplify your donation! 🎁
